О том, что Сахара когда-то была покрыта пышной растительностью, ученые подозревали давно. Но четкие доказательства этому появились в 2021 году, и были опубликованы в журнале Nature Geoscience. В исследовании говорится, что в Сахаре был умеренно влажный климат.
Считается, что периоды “озеленения” были связаны с орбитальными изменениями нашей планеты. В первую очередь это касается прецессией, то есть колебанием Земли вокруг своей оси, что отражается на так называемом сезонном контрасте. Цикл прецессии составляет около 21 тысяч лет. От этих изменений зависит количество солнечной энергии, которую планета получает в разные времена года.

От количества получаемой энергии зависит сила африканского муссона и разрастание лесов по африканскому региону. Однако до последнего момента не было полного понимания этих процессов, так как ученые не могли выяснить периодичность влажных периодов когда Сахара покрывалась зеленью.
В недавнем исследовании климатологи из Хельсинкского и Бристольского университетов впервые использовали наиболее продвинутую модель, которая учитывала наиболее широкий спектр данных. Это позволило подтвердить влияние прецессии Земли в Северной Африке на климат. Период прецессии составляет около 21000 лет. В определенные моменты более теплое лето в Северном полушарии начинает усиливать муссоны, в результате чего в Сахаре увеличивается количество осадков. Эти приводит к тому, что саванна и леса распространяются по пустыне. Однако, как выяснилось, на климатические колебания влияет только в прецессия.

Как ледники в северном полушарии влияют на Африку
Впервые ученым удалось обнаружить, что на влажность в Африке также оказывали влияние большие, высокоширотные ледниковые щиты, которые находятся на большом расстоянии от континента. Моделирование показало, что влажные периоды не происходили во время ледниковых периодов, когда большие ледники покрывали большую часть высоких широт.
«Циклическое преобразование пустыни Сахара в саванны и лесные экосистемы является одним из самых замечательных экологических изменений на планете» — говорит ведущий автор исследования, ученый-климатолог Эдвард Армстронг.
Связано это с тем, что гигантские ледники охлаждали атмосферу, в результате чего тенденция расширения муссонной системы и лесов останавливалась. Данная взаимосвязь, очевидно, также мешала видам распространяться за пределы континента в ледниковые периоды. В том числе это касается и людей.

Как поясняют исследователи, “ворота из Африки” открывались, когда Сахару покрывала пышная растительность, и закрывались, когда она превращалась в пустыню. Эти изменения, очевидно, оказывали большое влияние на эволюцию и расселение видов по планете. Ученые надеются, что новая модель поможет лучше понять, как человек распространился по планете и как вообще наш род эволюционировал в Африке. По их мнению, масштабы данного моделирования сопоставимы с палеоклиматическими наблюдениями, то есть исследованиями древнего климата, на основе данных, полученных палеонтологами.
