Это национальный парк, который простирается на более 13 тысяч квадратных километров и находится на границах штатов Калифорния и Невада. Это самое засушливое место в Северной Америке, в котором настолько жарко, что там могут обитать только приспособленные к высоким температурам животные. Растений в этом пустынном месте тоже мало. Считается, что в Долине Смерти редко идут дожди, потому что она находится очень низко, а высокие горы блокируют влагу с Тихого океана. Но иногда по этой территории все же проходят проливные дожди — например, это произошло в начале 2024 года. В результате выпадения огромного количества осадков там заново образовалось озеро Мэнли, которое существовало десятки тысяч лет назад.

Несмотря на низкое расположение за стенами высоких гор, проливные дожди коснулись и Национального парка Долина Смерти. Осадки наполнили водой впадину Бэдуотер, которая большую часть времени представляет собой сухую равнину.
Считается, что десятки тысяч лет назад на дне этой впадины располагалось озеро, которому ученые дали название Мэнли. За последние несколько десятков лет оно возрождалось заново, наполняясь дождевой водой. Например, это произошло в 2023 году в результате урагана Хилари. Стихийное бедствие вызвало проливные дожди, в результате которых озеро Мэнли из пустынной равнины разрослось до 11,3-метровой длины и глубины около 0,6 метров. Постепенно из-за испарения воды озеро снова почти исчезло.

В результате ливней в 2024 году древнее озеро выросло до 10-километровой длины и имеет глубину 0,3 метра. Само собой разумеется, там не водится рыба, потому что это озеро временное и со временем снова исчезнет. В Долине Смерти раньше добывалось золото
Новая местность оказалась очень экстремальной. Температура воздуха в пустынных землях иногда превышает +40 градусов Цельсия, и там нет источников воды. Даже самая малая ошибка в навигации может привести к мучительной гибели человека. Во время преодоления этого места в 1800-е годы многие люди потерялись и умерли. Из-за этого безжизненную местность и назвали Долиной Смерти.

Кто живет в Долине Смерти
Несмотря на то, что Долина Смерти является совершенно непригодным для жизни местом, в конце 19 и начале 20 века там появлялись поселения, в которых жили добытчики золота. Однако из-за суровых условий окружающей среды они не смогли просуществовать недолго.
Но некоторым животным все же удалось приспособиться к непростым условиям. Так, в пустынной местности иногда можно встретить койотов — родственников волков. Чтобы выжить при высоких температурах окружающей среды, эти хищники охотятся только по ночам. Также они обладают хорошей системой регуляции температуры тела при помощи дыхания. Также койотам помогает жизнь в больших группах и способность долго обходиться без питьевой воды, получая жидкость из тел своих жертв.
