Великая Китайская стена — является не только самым известным примером древних пограничных стен, но и, возможно, одни из самых масштабных памятников в истории человечества. Однако многие факты об этом сооружении остаются загадкой. Например, не все знают, что часть стены расположен за пределами Китая — на территории восточной Монголии. Она получила название “Великая стена Монголии”, или “Монгольская дуга”. Это сооружение представляет собой не цельную конструкцию, а систему стен, земляных валов и рвов протяженностью 405-километров. Ученые до сих пор не знают когда точно она была построена и какую функцию выполняла.

Великая Китайская стена содержит множество загадок, одной из которых является Монгольская дуга
Монгольская дуга — сеть стен и форпостов
Сотрудники Еврейского университета и Национального университета Монголии провели масштабное исследование Монгольской дуги. Эта работа в некоторой степени проливает свет на монументальную систему древних стен. Для своей работы авторы использовали комплексный подход, включающий в себя сбор данных дистанционного зондирования, полевые археологические исследования, а также анализ при помощи географических информационных систем (ГИС).
Кроме того, команда изучила древние письменные источники, чтобы получить больше информации о конструкции и возможном предназначении Монгольской дуги. Как удалось выяснить, Монгольская дуга протянулось на 405 километров, и включает в себя земляной вал, траншеи и 34 сопутствующих сооружений. Предположительно она была построена в период между XI и XIII веками нашей эры.

Монгольская дуга находится в восточной части Монголии
На разных участках дуга имеет разную высоту и ширину. На некоторых участках ее высота составляет около 4 метров, а ширина — порядка 3 метров. На других участках высота не превышает один метр или она вообще едва ли возвышается над землей. Средняя же высота стены составляет 1-1,5 метра. Сама стена не представляла собой каменное или кирпичное сооружение, как остальная часть Великой Китайской стены, а скорее была выкопанной из траншей и тщательно утрамбованной насыпью.
Кроме того, вдоль стены ученые обнаружили различные форпосты где, очевидно, размещались солдаты. Также они форпосты использовались для хранения запасов и наблюдения за окружающей территорией. Они находились как на высоких холмах, так и в низинах. Об этом исследователи сообщают в Journal of Field Archaeology.

Зачем была построена Монгольская дуга
Несмотря на масштаб и сложность конструкции, остается загадкой когда именно она была построена, а также кем и с какой целью. Более того, ученые пока не могут сказать, был ли весь массив стен построен одновременно или это скопление разных проектов, построенных в течение длительного периода времени. Ученые склоняются ко второй версии, однако исторические источники не содержат точной информации.
Согласно одной из гипотиз, стену возвели в XI-XII веках, когда Китаем правила династия Сун, а Монголией — империя Ляо. Согласно другой версии, стену возвели позже — в XIII веке, когда Китай покорила империя Чингисхана. Также есть еще одна версия, согласно которой стена построена еще позже — в XIV-XV веке, когда Китаем правила династия Мин, а Монголией — династия Юань.

Что касается предназначения конструкции, на этот счет также существует несколько гипотез. Основная версия, разумеется, предполагает что стена имеет оборонительное предназначение, то есть защищала территории от враждебных народов.
