Как светлячки общаются при помощи света
Светлячки используют световые сигналы для передачи друг другу информации. Правда, «световое общение» у них довольно примитивное, и сводится к половому поведению. Это значит, что самки сообщают о том, что ищут самцов, а самцы — подают сигнал, что им нужна самка. Соответственно, чтобы окружающие светлячки понимали кто им «подмигивает фонариком», то есть самец или самка, они используют два разных световых сигнала.
Например, самки южноазиатских светлячков Abscondita terminalis посылают самцам долгие световые сигналы с низкой частотой и имеют только один лантерн (орган свечения). Самцы же используют быстрые и короткие импульсы, и для этого у них имеется два лантерна.

Световые сигналы, с одной стороны, позволяют светлячкам быстро находить себе “пару”. Но с другой стороны — из-за такой заметности они становятся легкой добычей для хищников. В том числе, как выяснилось, их используют в своих интересах пауки-кругопряды.
Пауки используют светлячков как приманку
Китайские ученые обратили внимание на то, что у некоторых крестовиков паутина полна светлячков, причем, исключительно мужского пола. Самки в “сетях” паука вообще отсутствовали или попадались в них крайне редко. Конечно, это могло быть случайностью, но последующие наблюдения показали, что наличие в паутине только самцов является закономерностью.
Дальнейшее наблюдение показало что светлячки скапливались в тех «сетях», в которой находились пауки. Если же насекомое влетало в абсолютно пустую паутину, то оставалось там одно или, в лучшем случае, с еще одним таким же неудачливым светлячком. Это противоречит гипотезе о том, что попав в паутину, насекомое посылает сигнал бедствия. В противном случае в паутине с пауком было бы еще меньше светлячков.

Как пауки заставляют светлячков изменять световые сигналы
Авторы исследования, чтобы выяснить в чем причина такой странности, решили провести эксперимент в полевых условиях — они помещали в паутину к паукам обычных светлячков самцов и таких же самцов, но с закрашенными черной краской “фонариками”.
Когда в паутине оказывался обычный светлячок, паук приближался к нему и совершал повторяющиеся атаки, состоящие из укуса и обертывания добычи паутиной. Причем атаки совершались только в тот момент, когда светлячок мигал. В результате таких действий самцы Abscondita terminalis меняли характер сигнала и начинали посылать импульсы, подобные импульсам самок. То есть пораженные ядом паука самцы начинали привлекать своими импульсами не самок, а других самцов.
Со следующими попавшими в паутину самцами паук проделывал то же самое, и тоже оставлял их в живых, о чем авторы сообщают в издании Current Biology. Когда же в паутину помещали светлячков с закрашенным “фонариком”, паук не совершал повторяющиеся атаки, а просто съедал их.
Для исследователей пока остается загадкой, что именно является причиной изменения световых сигналов — яд паука или сам укус. Предположительно, яд каким-то образом отключает один из лантернов. Например, токсин может действовать на нейромедиаторы, управляющие свечением. Но, вполне возможно, что яд воздействует непосредственно на сам “фонарик”. Например, он может лишать его кислорода, без которого не происходят необходимые для свечения биохимические реакции. Чтобы сделать окончательные выводы, ученым потребуются дополнительные исследования.
Пауки иногда создают из добычи “пугало”
Можно было бы предположить, что паук на самом деле не использует светлячков как “приманку” для его же собратьев. Возможно, у Abscondita terminalis отключается один “фонарик” в результате реакции на стресс и опасность. Однако это противоречит поведению самого паука, который оставлял в живых мигающих светлячков и поедал тех, которые имели закрашенные “фонарики”. Это говорит о том, то крестовик действительно использует насекомых в своих целях.

Например, пауки-кругопряды рода Cyclosa выстраивают из мертвых насекомых и мусора в центре паутины большого паука. Правда, он служит не приманкой, а наоборот, “пугалом” для хищников. А вот использование живых извивающихся насекомых, чтобы заманить побольше его же собратьев — это совершенно иной уровень «злодейства», о котором ученые узнали впервые.
