23 августа индийский космический аппарата Чандраян-3 успешно сел на поверхность Луны. Это сделало Индию четвертой страной, которая совершила мягкую посадку на поверхности естественного спутника, и первой страной, которая совершила посадку на южном полюсе Луны. Место было выбрано не случайно, так как на этом участке, предположительно, имеется лед, который может обеспечить будущие лунные базы и миссии кислородом, водой и топливом. Чандраян-3 стал главной космической миссией Индии последних нескольких лет, однако это была вторая попытка посадки. Впервые Индийская организация космических исследований (ISRO) отправила к Луне аппарат Chandrayaan-2 с ровером на борту в 2019 году, но миссия оказалась не такой удачной как в этот раз.

Миссия Чандраян-2 — неудача первого индийского лунохода
Аппарат Чандраян-2 состоял из орбитального модуля, который по сей день находится на орбите Луны, и спусковой платформы “Викрам” с луноходом “Прагьян” на борту. Миссия Чандраян-2 до самого последнего момента шла без каких-либо происшествий — аппарат вошел на орбиту спутника и спустился до необходимой высоты. Спусковая платформа отделилась и начала спуск в штатном режиме.
Но незадолго до посадки связь с аппаратом оборвалась. Как впоследствии выяснилось, из-за сбоя в программном обеспечении преждевременно отключился посадочный двигатель, в результате чего платформа рухнула на поверхность Луны. Зонду LRO удалось обнаружить место крушения индийского аппарата и сфотографировать его.

Надо сказать, что несмотря на неудачную посадку, основные задачи, поставленные в рамках миссии Чандраян-2, были выполнены. Как уже было сказано выше, орбитальный модуль продолжает работать по сей день.
Миссия Чандраян-3 и ее задачи
Спустя всего два месяца после крушения посадочного модуля, ISRO объявила о намерении запустить миссию Чандраян-3. Изначально планировалось подготовить ее максимально быстро и запустить в 2020 году, но из-за пандемии COVID-19 запуск был отложен на несколько лет и осуществлен 14 июля 2023 года.
Аппарат Чандраян-3, как и его предшественник, состоит из перелетного модуля и спускаемой платформы, которая содержит луноход. Перелетный модуль будет работать на орбиты Луны — выполнять функцию ретранслятора данных, а также измерять спектральные и поляриметрические характеристики Земли. Полученная информация может пригодиться исследователям, которые изучают экзопланеты, напоминающие Землю.
Посадочный модуль Чандраян-3 аналогичен своему предшественнику
Спусковая платформа также имеет двойное назначение. Она займется сбором данных о сейсмической активности спутника, свойствах плазмы у поверхности лунной коры, а также о тепловых характеристиках лунной почвы (реголита). Ровер же оснащен инструментами для исследования минералогического состава грунта.
Но миссия лунохода и посадочного модуля будет недолгой — они рассчитаны на работу в течение всего одного лунного дня, который равен примерно 14 земным суткам. Но, вполне возможно, что обоим аппаратам удастся пережить лунную ночь и перезарядить свои батареи. В таком случае миссия может продлиться.
Посадка Чандраян-3 на Луну
Как было сказано выше, миссия Чандраян-3 стартовала 14 июля. Космический аппарат несколько раз обогнул Землю, увеличивая радиус орбиты, а затем направился к Луне. Уже 5 августа он вышел на Лунную орбиту с перигеем (минимальным расстоянием до Луны) в 170 км и апогеем (максимальным расстоянием) 36 500 км.

Затем аппарат выполнил ряд маневров, в результате которых перешел на 100-километровую орбиту, на которой произошло отделение спусковой платформы от перелетного модуля. На этот раз спуск прошел без внештатных ситуаций. Надо сказать, что задача была достаточно сложной из-за неровного рельефа и множества кратеров на обратной стороны Луны. Однако благодаря новому программному обеспечению, расширенной зоне посадки и дополнительным системам предотвращения сбоев, модуль справился с этой задачей.

Во время посадки орбитальный аппарат Чандраян-2 отправил посадочному модулю сигнал “Welcome, buddy!” (Добро пожаловать, приятель!). Таким образом была установлена двусторонняя связь между вторым и третьим “Чандраянами”.
