Почему кремний не используют в батареях
В последнее время возникла очевидная потребность в аккумуляторах с более высокой плотностью энергии. Именно по этой причине электромобили имеют сравнительно небольшой запас хода. Увеличивать размеры аккумуляторов с целью повышения их емкости нецелесообразно, так как это сильно отразится на их весе и стоимости. В то же время при нынешней плотности энергии, которая составляет 272-296 Втч на кг, увеличить запас хода другим способом сложно.
Кроме того, низкая электрическая плотность батарей ограничивает развитие многих других технологий. Например, голландская компания Elysian планирует создать первый в мире электрический авиалайнер. Однако в настоящее время на пути к созданию такого самолета стоят как раз батареи с низкой плотностью энергии. Поэтому инженеры ждут, когда появятся новые технологии.

Кремний широко распространен во всем мире
Увеличить плотность энергии теоретически можно при помощи кремния в батареях. Надо сказать, что использование кремния в батареях имеет ряд преимуществ. Самое главное из них заключается в том, что кремний доступен во всем мире. Однако у кремниевых элементов есть один серьезный недостаток — в процессе зарядки они сильно увеличиваются в объеме, а после зарядки снова уменьшаются.
Поэтому кремний в батареях можно использовать только в качестве наночастиц. Это позволяет повысить емкость, и при этом устранить многие недостатки литий-ионных батарей. Однако использование наночастиц кремния упирается в другую проблему — их производство является сложным и дорогостоящим процессом.
Новая технология для автомобильных аккумуляторов
Сотрудники Университета науки и технологий Пхохан в Южной Корее смогли решить проблему использования кремния в аккумуляторах. Они предлагают вместо наночастиц использовать микрочастицы, которые в 100 раз больше. Поэтому производить их гораздо проще и дешевле, кроме того они имеют более высокую плотность энергии, то есть могут вместить в себя больше энергии при равном объеме.

Чтобы решить проблему изменения объема частиц в процессе зарядки, ученые придумали использовать в аккумуляторах гелиевый полимерный электролит. Благодаря эластичности, он может деформироваться и тем самым компенсировать изменение объема кварцевых частиц. Однако все частицы должны быть между собой связаны на химическом уровне, поэтому просто поместить их в гель недостаточно. Чтобы решить эту проблему, исследователи облучили смесь из геля и микрочастиц электронным лучом. В результате образовались ковалентные связи между частицами.
В чем преимущества новых аккумуляторов
Как сообщают ученые в издании Advanced Science, в ходе испытаний батарея показала стабильную работу и имела похожие свойства с традиционными литий-ионными аккумуляторами, однако плотность энергии у нее на 40% выше. То есть при одинаковом объеме, емкость таких батарей почти в полтора раза выше. Благодаря этому запас хода электромобилей может быть существенно увеличена.
