Что такое миелоидный лейкоз
Пол Эдмонс жил с ВИЧ на протяжении 31 года. Потом у него обнаружился другой страшный диагноз — острый миелоидный лейкоз. Это злокачественная опухоль, при которой у человека быстро размножаются измененные белые кровяные клетки. Они накапливаются в костном мозге и подавляют производство здоровых клеток крови. У людей с этим диагнозом наблюдается быстрая утомляемость, одышка, кровоточивость и частые инфекционные заболевания. Без лечения острый миелоидный лейкоз приводит к смерти за несколько месяцев или даже недель.

Такая хирургическая операция обычно проводится в качестве заключительного этапа лечения острого миелоидного лейкоза, лейкемии, миеломы и лимфомы. Сначала производящие кровь стволовые клетки в костном мозге пациента были разрушены в ходе химиотерапии. Потом в костный мозг были введены здоровые стволовые клетки от донора. Таким образом, организм Пола Эдмонса начал производить здоровые клетки крови, и его рак был излечен.
Заодно хирургическая операция полностью избавила его от ВИЧ. Дело в том, что у донора стволовых клеток имелась генетическая мутация CCR5 delta-3, которая делает людей устойчивыми к ВИЧ. Она встречается только у 2% населения Земли, поэтому пациенту очень повезло. Вирус иммунодефицита человека использует рецептор CCR5 для проникновения в иммунные клетки. Но при наличии мутации CCR5 delta-3 этот путь становится для него закрытым.
