В 2500 году до нашей эры в долине реки Инд возвышался крупный город с населением около 40 тысяч человек, известный как Мохенджо-Даро. Он неуклонно рос и развивался на протяжении почти 1000 лет, но в какой-то момент без видимой причины пришел в упадок. В настоящее время руины города расположены на территории современного Пакистана, в юго-западной части провинции Синд. Город был обнаружен в 1922 году, тогда же археологам удалось раскопать примерно треть его построек. Само его название “Мохенджо-Даро” переводится как “Курган мертвецов”. На его территории действительно было обнаружено множество останков людей. При этом ученые по сей день ломают голову над тем, что же на самом деле произошло с его жителями.

Что произошло с городом Мохенджо-Даро
Мохенджо-Даро перестал существовать в период с 1800 по 1700 год. Учитывая то, как он сохранился, ученые пришли к выводу, что город не постепенно приходил в упадок. Версия о том, что город Мохенджо-Даро погиб в результате засухи, была косвенно подтверждена недавним исследованием ученых из Кембриджского Университета. Они изучили структуру древнего сталагмита, добытого в пещере в Гималаях. Эта информация позволяет сделать выводы об осадках в разные периоды времени.
Исследование показало, что 4200 лет назад в регионе начались сильные засухи, которые сохранялись в течение нескольких сотен лет. Даже за пределами долины Инда и Гималаев были обнаружены доказательства, что в этот период времени произошла мегазасуха, которую назвали “событием длительностью 4,2 килогода”.
